Poster survey

Using a tally, I asked 20 people which poster out of three designs they thought should be used to advertise our film trailer. It was clear from the results that the first poster design was favourited was Poster 1 which obtained over half of the votes over posters 2 and 3.

From the most popular choice, I asked what caused them to choose that poster. The most frequent answer was that there was a link between the poster and the trailer as in the trailer, clips of the film are shown through Polaroid images and in the poster, stills from the film are shown on images within a Polaroid image which is framed by the general information included on a poster such as the age certificate, etc. Although from the other answers, thus poster also clearly shows the genre and teases the viewer by showing small parts of the film in the stills.

Tagline Research

Once we finished filming we moved onto the ancillary tasks that needed to be completed (Film Poster and Website). To do this we needed to carry out research into film taglines so we could create one for own poster. For our tagline for the film poster we wanted to include something about trust and love to keep it related to the film, or have something about secrets and lies, as the main girl in the trailer is hiding a big secret from her boyfriend.

To do this I looked at other films to see what their taglines were, and how they related to the film. The following films are the ones we researched:

Gravity Tagline:- "Don't Let Go"

Seven Tagline:- "Seven Deadly Sins. Seven Ways To Die"

House at the End of The Street:- "Fear Its Secret"

Shutter Island:- "Someone is Missing"

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo:- "Evil Shall with Evil be Expelled"

From this research we have chosen a Tagline that is related to the film, as all the films we researched in to, the tagline is either related to the genre or the storyline. All the tag lines we researched used short sentences, that are three or four words long. However as we wanted to include a question for the tagline we were unable to think of a suitable for our poster. We brainstormed key words to do with Mystery, Love, Secrets, Lies, our trailer and other relevant emotions. There were many ideas that we cam up with, but we have chosen:-
"Do You Trust The One You Love?"

This is because our main aspect of our film trailer is the mystery behind the couple and why the girl is hiding a big secret from her secret boyfriend, and why she isn't telling him. We also left it as question due to the genre of our film trailer being a mystery, meaning that they have to watch the film to find out why.
Below is a link to the final film poster, with the tagline in place on the film poster.

Tutorial: Wix

We have been encountering problems when trying to create our website including how to change certain text, etc. Therefore we have used a tutorial uploaded by the Youtube account 'BiggerPockets' which has enabled us to successfully edit titles and headings to the page as well as helping us to add images and in cooperate our trailer into the design.

Codes and Conventions of Film Websites

I have created a bubble map to show the different codes and conventions that are typically used in film websites.

Analysis of Promotional Package - American Hustle

To make all three of our products as effective as they can be it is essential to think of them as a package rather than just individual products. Here is some research I have done into the existing promotional package of 'American Hustle' by analysing the similarities between the products and how this makes it effective as a package.

Film Poster Inspiration

During research of film posters we came across the posters that were created for the film 'Memento'; as we have used Polaroid pictures throughout our film trailer we were inspired by these posters as they have similarly used polaroids in the promotion of their film. This effectively presents the genre of crime/mystery, there for showing conventions of the genre needed to be promoted to help attract an audience from the poster.

Existing Film Posters

What they all have in common:-
  • Titles located towards the bottom of the poster
  • Tagline at the top of the poster, In a much smaller size font than the title.
  • Names of the cast above the tagline, located at the very top of the page.
  • Nearly all of the posters, contain the faces of the main character
  • Colour of the title stands out from the background, red/white/yellow

Health and Safety Considerations

When filming we had to think of multiple health and safety considerations that we will come across when we are filming our trailer, we also had to think of ways to resolve them.

Alcohol:-

We will be using alcohol bottles throughout our film trailer, but as we are under the legal age limit (18) we will be using empty bottles and will be using them with water instead of the alcohol that comes with it. This is because alcohol has some serious side effects that could be life threatening if abusing, it could cause harm to our actor as he will be unaware of his surroundings and could result in him injuring himself or others.

Broken Glass:-

To the left, I have created a video explaining all the ways we protected ourselves when we had to smash a glass bottle. It includes an explanation of what we did and also live scenes of us explaining to the camera of how we did it.

I have added a link that everyone has to follow by law. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/law.pdf

Film and social media

Films often create awareness through advertising the company or the film on social network websites. Using social network is a form of below the line advertising which is cheap, quick and easy to use. It has been used for both large production and individually made films.

How awareness is made

- Following/subscribing - people who like the content will sign up to the account to see all posts as they are sent

- Liking - people show the account owners what they like/ want to see more of by liking the photo/post

- Commenting - allows the account holder to receive feedback from anyone on the website, both positive and negative, as this is received directly from members of the target market it can help improve the film especially if it is from a smaller production company

- Sharing/reblogging - followers and people who see your account share it with others who don't, therefore creating a wider audience (allowing the posts to be seen worldwide)

- Key words - especially used on Twitter with the use of a # these can create trends which are seen worldwide and are often popular discussion topics

Three of the most popular social media websites of 2013 include Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Make Up Ideas

In our film trailer, we are having a detective who is struggling to work out what happened from the case that he was assigned to solve, because of this he has developed a alcohol problem and has become very tired and stressed, this resulting in him looking very worn out.

To achieve the look that we require for our actor, we will be using dark make up around the eyes and underneath, with a hint of purple in the corner and under to show the bags under his eyes, which has resulted in the lack of sleep and stress, we will blend this in with a thin make up brush so it doesn't look as if we have put make up on. We will also "colour in" the actors wrinkles/ lines on his face to make them more exaggerated, as many people get wrinkles from the lack of sleep and stress.
As our actor has a pale complexion we are going to use a foundation that is lighter than his skin or a concealer on our actor to make him look very pale and worn out.

For the girls make up, we will be using two very different styles as we are having a personality change for the girl. The first style is sweet, natural and girly and the second style is Gothic/grunge. To portray this using make up we will use natural looking make up, with light pinks and rose colours to show her soft feminine side for the first style, to thick black eye liner and smoky eye make up for the second.

To achieve these looks I needed to research into the different styles, so that I could get an idea of what the make up would look like and how I would do it. below I have added a mood board that I created:

Mood Board - Costumes

The first mood board that I have created is showing the contrasting fashion that is commonly worn by girly girls and grunge/gothic girls. We have chosen to do this because our characters personality changes throughout the trailer from good to bad, so we want the clothes to reflect how she is feeling.
From this research we can see that girls with a girly/flirty personality would normally wear light pastel pinks/whites and converse.

The second mood board is showing all the different items of clothes that a police decetive would wear. We have included the sterotypical long brown trench coat with glasses and a hat.

Location Setting 1

For our film trailer we needed our location setting to be in small, cramped detectives office, that would also have enough room to fit in a bed, as the detective will not only be working in his office but also living in his office. As we were unable to find a location that suits the location setting needs, we decided to created our own office and decorate it the way we want/need. To do this we used a small room that was in the process of being decorated so that we could convert it into a living and working office the way require.

To do this we created a desk and then designed and laid out the objects that you would normally find in a detectives office and also any that we needed for the trailer, e.g. a computer, sheets of paper, evidence in bags, old stained coffee cups, dead plants, and mountains of paperwork. We either created these items, such as the work sheets and old cups of coffee or found items placed around the house.
This photo is showing the detectives desk with all the photo-
graphic evidence on and above the desk.

we have created to be put on the desk.

Location Scouting

For part of our trailer we see the couples relationship break down in the home that they live together. However to achieve this we needed the perfect location for this to happen. We needed the location to be dark but also provide some light for when we do some scenes. We also needed a separate room and a small cupboard for when the girl serves dinner and also for when she hides the gifts she gets from her 'secret boyfriend'.

Sound Research - Websites

For our research for sound we looked into a few websites that supply royalty free sounds that we could use for our film trailer. Free Sound is a site where members of the site can upload sounds they have recorded and download sounds other members have uploaded for free. This includes anything from musical instruments to slamming doors, and will helpful for adding sound effects to our trailer.

Incompetech is a website that supplies royalty free music by Kevin MacLeod in a number of styles to fit any genre. You can download the music from the website for free and it is uncopyrighted, meaning it can be used in media without violating any terms and conditions. This could be used to contribute towards the score of our film trailer.
